President of the Alexandra Musical Society
Inc. Hugh McIntyre, said they had talked about
producing 'Rush' as their annual show quite a
few years ago.
"So when the 150th celebrations came around,
it seemed pretty appropriate for us to do it," he
And do it they are -- with a director from Auckland bringing the
show together, a cast of around 40 members on stage along with
numerous helpers fulfilling various other important roles, all of
these people symbolising a huge commitment from people who
live across the region to ensuring this show is well cast and a
"We have got people from as far afield as Roxburgh, Naseby,
St Bathans and Cromwell in various roles -- that is a good
representation of people from across our district," Mr McIntyre
Musical rehearsals have been underway since late June, with
director Simon Coleman arriving on the scene on August 6.
"We move into the theatre about the 12th September, so that is
when things will really start to take shape."
Mr McIntyre said they had been very fortunate that the Gore
Operatic Society had presented 'Rush' a few years back, which
meant they were able to acquire parts of their set, costumes
and props. "This was a huge benefit to us, that they made this
available," he said. "The props are all very authentic and will look
very good on the stage, especially with the lighting effects which
will be incorporated into the show."
Meanwhile, the countdown is on to Opening night on Saturday 22
September which Mr McIntyre expects will be sold out.
"There will be a glass of bubbly on arrival, and we are delighted
that David John and members of the Lynch family will be there."
"This show has had good reviews wherever it has been done."
"It's a good musical, with great music and a mixture of drama,
humour and passion and a range of songs and good choral
"We thought it would go down well in our Community and look
forward to many people coming along and enjoying 'Rush'."
-- RUSH DIRECTOR
Mention the name Simon Coleman in New
Zealand theatre circles, and his name will be
to many. As a Professional Director, Simon has
been responsible for directing many shows, with 'Rush' the third
one on his schedule for 2012 and show number 115 on his long
list of directing successes. Already in 2012 he has directed shows
in Blenheim and Wellington, and heads back to Auckland once
his commitment to 'Rush' is completed to direct 'Little Shop of
Accepting an invitation from the Alexandra Musical Society to
take up the Director's position for 'Rush', has brought Simon to
the lower half of the South Island to take up his southern-most
directing position at his southern-most venue.
While Central Otago is new territory for Simon, so is the show, as
this is the first time he has been involved with 'Rush', although he
was aware of the production.
Now after several weeks of rehearsal Simon starts the countdown
as he steers the show towards opening night scheduled for
Saturday 22 September, with two major occurrences due to take
place in these the final weeks of rehearsal.
First is the moving of the set into the theatre, while today another
milestone is achieved when the cast begins rehearsing in the
Simon says the rehearsals are going very well. Being able to
rehearse with the props pretty much from the beginning, these
having been sourced from the Gore Operatic Society, has been a
wonderful luxury for the production team and the cast.
"Everyone is very committed and keen and attendance has been
fantastic," Simon said.
"Everyone seems very excited about what we are creating. It's
such an interesting story especially as it is really relevant to this
part of the world, which makes it a unique experience for me and
also the cast."
