Welcome to the Alexandra Blos-
som Festival 2012.
I always enjoy this time of year
as we come out of winter and we start
looking forward to the long warm days
For me the Blossom Festival marks this
transition, so I always look forward to its
But of course Blossom Festival is more
than a celebration of the arrival of
spring, it is a community celebration
that involves everyone.
Obviously the parade and the activities
in the park are the highlights of the
festival but there are many other events
incorporated into this celebration.
There truly is something for everyone to
enjoy and remember.
If you are participating in some way I
hope you enjoy the challenge that you
have set yourself.
If you are just sitting back and watching,
or coming from out of town to help us
celebrate, I hope you enjoy the occasion
and share the pride we have in our

Welcoming Spring to
Welcome to the 56th Alexandra Blossom Festival --
welcoming Spring to our community.
This year the Blossom Festival Committee has
worked hard with our event manager, Martin,
and our community to produce an event
designed to meet the community's aspirations,
balance its books and benefit the community.
Community groups and committed individuals have
been working industriously on float designing and
building, vehicle preparation and parade logistics,
community projects and events, park site preparation
and management, Festival Princess and Senior
Princess events, Mardi Gras and Around the Clock
race, amongst a myriad of other activities.
It is certainly the time when people are called on to
'do their bit'!
Blossom Festival Committee members and I give
huge and heartfelt thanks to all of you who are
committed to making our own special Festival
happen this year.
This year we've had a change in rules for float
construction. I'm anxious to make sure we keep our
'blossom' element whilst at the same time moving
with where people are.
There are new and different materials, technologies
and stories. We must work hard to maintain the
traditions of the festival parade and stay meaningful
to all parts of our community and all ages.
The 'back to basics' thinking implemented by the
committee when the event was under stress is still
driving the festival.
These elements are, good quality entertainment,
plenty of quality activities for children and with
children throughout the day, ensuring things are
affordable, where possible engaging with local
businesses and local community groups and
recognising community and individual effort.
I think it will knock your socks off! Have fun!

It is the 56th anniversary of the
Contact Alexandra Blossom Festival
and it's great to see the level of
interest we have this year from the
Some of you may recall that a couple
years back the festival went through a
rough patch and our community came
close to losing such an iconic event.
Fast forward to 2012 and the festival is
now flourishing and we're keen to do
what we can to help make this year's
festival a success.
Speaking of which, our schools
promotion is back by popular demand,
which means all Central Otago primary
school pupils will get a free carnival
ride or ticket to the Contact Saturday in
the Park event, also sponsored by
Plus we'll be continuing our support of
the Grand Procession street parade
and, of course, let's not forget the
Contact float that will be available for
the Senior Queen contestant and her
two attendants during the parade.
The festival is a great way to kick the
winter blues and celebrate the
transition from winter to spring.
It's also a fantastic opportunity for us
to showcase our town so I look forward
to seeing you all there. After all,
everyone loves a good festival!
