Owaka-based businesses walk the talk'
Two Catlins business's that walk the talk in green tourism are
Owaka based Earthlore and Mohua Park at Tawanui. For both
these businesses being green means more than offering
natural experiences to visitors, it very much means getting
actively involved by protecting, enhancing and advocating for
nature. Earthlore is a multifaceted business dedicated to raising
awareness of New Zealand's native insects by combining fun
activities with the planting of a two hectare Insect Conservation
Habitat. By offering people the opportunity to sponsor the
planting of a variety of host plants designed to replicate the
habitats and fulfill the needs of a large number of New Zealand
native insects throughout their lifecycle, Gordon and Janine
Thompson actively encourage every single person to become
involved in insect conservation. Earthlore places a special
emphasis on fun activitiesfor children, such as BUG FRISBEE,
and has developed a character called Inspector Insector to
encourage children to interact with nature and learn about the
fascinating life forms we live along side of.
Mohua Park is an accommodation and ecotour business based
on a 12 hectare native forest
reserve. The reserve has
been protected with a legal
covenant with the QEII
National Trust and is protec-
ted from pests by continuous
possum, rat and stoat control.
As a result of this protection
Mohua Park supports a high
population of birds. The
incorporate energy saving
features such as extra insu-
lation, solar water heating
and sun-trap design and
glazing. Fergus and Mary
Sutherland, who created the
Mohua Park tourist business,
say that everything that they
have done to protect and
enhance their environment
makes good economic sense
and gives them satisfaction
and enjoyment because it is
all about their core green
beliefs, summed up by their

Lockwood Eco Smart
Solid wood is the No 1 healthy building material on the planet,
so why wouldn't you build your new home with one of NZ
longest standing home builders that only construct there
homes with solid timber, Lockwood, New Zealand's home for
Aside from the sustainability factor of solid wood, these houses
create very healthy home environments.
Solid wood actually improves indoor humidity, meaning it acts
as a passive dehumidifier over the colder months, and has a
very high thermal mass for heat retention.
Lockwood Eco Smart series are designed to encourage the
capture of good low angle sun and the exclusion of bad high
angle, summer sun.
This applies to roof overhangs and angles of screening. They
are designed to increase the benefits of passive heating,
ventilation and overall decrease the energy consumption of the
home. This includes joinery placement, room layout and
internal air movement.
Many other features are used as possible to maximise Eco
benefits -- such as solar heating, water collection and re use,
efficient heating, lighting, pellet or clean burning wet back wood
burners, photovoltaic's and Eco friendly appliances.
Concrete floors are the preferred foundation construction for
thermal gain but if site requires timber subfloor then
polystyrene insulation must be used to provide R Values
greater than H1 requirements from council.
