Special images captured on film are a
snapshot frozen in time full of precious
memories that can't be replaced so it's
important your wedding photographer is
up to speed.
Their professional services won't come
cheap but you'll have the pictures of one
of the most memorable events in your life
forever. Before choosing a photographer
don't be afraid to ask around. Personal
referees are a great way to start and
most people aren't scared to be open
and honest about their experience. Ask
questions like how the photographer
behaved at the ceremony (nobody likes a
domineering, arrogant photographer); if
they were pleased with the pics and how
long it took to get their photographs back.
Let your fingers do the walking on your
search for the perfect photographer and
begin by checking out the internet, Yellow
Pages and bridal magazines. Make a list
of favourites and check their portfolio out
on line before checking their availability.
Unfortunately the more expensive
photographers are usually the better ones
but it doesn't hurt to shop around or try
any bargaining techniques.
Face to face
You need to meet your potential
photographer face to face so you
can check out their work and unique
style - which may not suit you. Some
photographers strive for artistic, romantic
shots by utilising every aspect of digital
technology... if you just want basic,
family shots then you may not need to
pay the big bucks for your photographer.
Regardless of their expertise you must
have a good rapport with them and trust
they will do an excellent job. Ask about
the number of weddings they have done
and his/her familiarity with the location.
Be specific about arrival and departure
times and work this into your wedding
Terms of agreement
If you have any creative ideas or "must-
have" shots discuss these with your
photographer. They should be open to
your ideas and give good advice.
Wedding photographers usually have
varying packages which may include an
album, proofs and/or high-resolution files.
Do you want any pics in black or white?
Will images be touched up? A very
important question is how long after the
wedding will you receive your pictures?
It's not acceptable to wait months on end
for your much anticipated photos.
By rule of thumb they say whatever
you think a wedding photographer will
cost, double it. Photographers range
in cost from about $1500 upwards and
often prices can exceed your planned
budget. To really reign in costs you could
search for photographers who will do
your wedding for around $1000, but this
may mean you just receive the memory
card to reproduce your own pics. On the
other hand if you are not bothered about
perfect pictures let the guests do it for
you and give them disposable cameras
to use. Whatever you decide make sure
photography quotes include all charges.
Book them in
Good photographers can be booked a
year in advance, so it is important you
don't hesitate too much once you've
made your decision.
Ask about their policy for an unforseen
change or cancellation before you place
any deposit and ask about their backup
plan for unforeseen circumstances, just
