Tough training rallies team

The Cromwell Rugby Club premier
team has been given a pre-season
boost with some intensive training
from ex-All Blacks and Hurricanes
players Norm Hewitt and Dion
The men spent the weekend in
Cromwell where they held three
sessions of hard physical training.
Organiser William Bowman said the
men's experience and motivation
gave the team a massive push.
''They just really shared their
passion and showed what they have
for the game.
''They made everyone give 100 per
cent. This will raise the standard for
what we expect for the season now.''
Bowman, the team physio, took on
the role of trainer after a dismal
season featuring only two wins for
the team last year.
''I'm pretty competitive and didn't
like watching these guys lose. I'm
just trying to set the standard higher
and get everyone to push themselves
This year the club would be marking
its 125th year and needed to make it
a good one, he said.
''We're keen to give it a good nudge
to honour the history of the club.''
Golden glow: Wakatipu and Wanaka
Rowing Clubs were thrilled to win gold
medals at the New Zealand Club
Rowing Championships in Twizel at the
weekend. The Wanaka club claimed its
first national title with the men's under-
19 coxed four of (pictured, from left)
coxswain Hamish Roulston, Nick
Jackson, Jarrod Wellman, James Redai
and Jamie Bowley, coached by Dave
Varney, putting in a polished
performance. The Wakatipu men's
novice four of George Dennison,
Latham Jones, Reid Long, Logan Boyd
and coxswain Henry Matthews won
their gold medal by two boat lengths. It
was the club's first gold medal in more
than 10 years.

down the discus and javelin
Clyde man Pete Hoskin is in the
hunt for his first New Zealand
Master titles in the two disci-
Hoskin will take part in the
javelin, discus and shot put
during the New Zealand Mas-
ters Track and Field in Welling-
ton between March 1 and 4.
Hoskin said the last time he
competed at the event was in
1995 when he won a bronze
medal in the 800m track event.
However, after a break of over
15 years he decided last year to
try his hand in field events.
His first success was in October
when he competed in the
throwing events at the South
Island Masters Games in
Timaru. He placed first in the
three events for 65 to 70 years.
Now it's time to step up and
compete with the ''big boys'', Mr
While Mr Hoskin will be
competing as an individual he
will compete in Otago colours.
However, training too hard and
too long for the competition has
left Mr Hoskin with a ''decent
dose of tennis elbow''.
''If I was to come home with a
placing, I'll be ecstatic,'' he said.
He urged anyone thinking about
picking up a masters sport or
was willing to start training to
get in contact with him.
