Keeping people safe
in the outdoors
Southland Locator Beacons has
now rescued over 200 people in
the 17 years that it has been
running. More than 50 would have
lost their lives had they not been
rescued in time.
'Southland Locator Beacons' is a non-
profit organisation that is committed
to providing the best service possible
at the lowest affordable rates with the
aim of keeping people safe in the
A comprehensive website
(locatorbeacons.co.nz) lists details of
the many outlets available
throughout NZ. It also explains how
much the beacon will cost to hire and
the backup process in place, meaning
that members of the public can come
into one of over 30 outlets
throughout New Zealand and know
before walking in, important details
such as how much it is going to cost
to hire a beacon through to the
excellent back up service available
once the beacon is hired.
When one of the 'Southland Locator
Beacons' is hired, the customer's
details and information is entered
into their data base which is
monitored 24/7 by the group. That
means if you become overdue, we
WILL immediately start looking for
you, or if you set our beacon off, as
we are notified as soon as that signal
is picked up. We then pass on the full
information that you have filled out
on your hire form... details such as
how many are in your party, your
intended area of travel (this confirms
the GPS location that your beacon is
transmitting from) and any other
special notes on the hire form. This
information helps the SAR teams
immensely because they know what
size helicopter to send, and the
medical staff necessary to rescue you.
In the past, we have had rescues
undertaken where the people who
hired the beacon put on the form that
one of them had a heart condition:
this fore-warned rescue staff to be
prepared and have the equipment
needed for such a rescue.
The Locator Beacons we use are all
ACR Beacons and are 'state of the art'
in their design, size and weight. We
have never had a failure with these
beacons which have been used in the
rental market since 2009. We regularly
update our beacons so that none of
beacons are over 4 years old, with the
majority less than two years old.
Our policy is simple, we want to make
it safer for anyone who wants to
enjoy New Zealand's great outdoors
without breaking the bank. The
money you spend on taking one of
these life saving devices might do just
that... SAVE your life!
Peace of mind is priceless and so

Hunting safely with Central Otago Hunting & Fishing
With the Roar' approaching, and the enticement of hunting stags during their mating
season, this is the time when a lot of hunters hope to achieve a trophy of a lifetime'.
By TRISH MACKENZIE
This opportunity only happens for a short
time every year and quite often this
means there will be more hunters about
Only an avid hunter understands the desire
to get in amongst the roaring stags and
hopefully be able to claim that much desired
Nowadays there is a wide range of gear
available to give the hunter the advantage
over the wily stag - from camo clothing to
roaring devices, all these are available in-
store at Central Otago Hunting and Fishing.
The team in-store know from personal
experience there is nothing like getting up
close to a roaring stag, while keeping hidden
and roaring back to him to entice him to
come in closer.
This not only gets a hunter's adrenalin
pumping but ensures their senses are
focused on shooting a trophy stag!!!
STOP!!! WAIT!!! IS WHAT YOU SEE
ACTUALLY A PERSON? COULD IT POSSIBLY
BE YOUR MATE?
The hunter wants to see a deer in their
sights, the events leading up to this point
lead them to expect a deer, and their senses
are hoping for a deer.
BUT IS IT?
In this situation it is TOP PRIORITY that the
TARGET IS IDENTIFIED.
As a hunter, it is imperative that you are
absolutely 100 per cent sure it is a deer in
your sights before you pull the trigger.
Sound or movement alone are
not enough for a hunter to
base their decision on.
At Central Otago Hunting and
Fishing we promote safety.
There have been too many
hunting accidents in recent
times and we want to prevent
In store is a range of Blaze
clothing and hats in a choice of
orange or blue blaze, to help
hunters to identify what they
are looking at.
One of the more recent tools in
store at Hunting and Fishing to
help a hunter attract a stag, is
the new Cass Creek Electronic
It sounds so realistic that we
are giving away a Blaze cap
with every Cass Creek caller sold (while
stocks last) to help stop accidental
Whether you use camo clothing or roar in
the stags, you should make sure your mates
or other hunters know you're not a deer by
at least wearing some blaze clothing.
Good luck for the 'Roar' and take time to
positively identify your target.
REMEMBER: ''It's better to lose a stag than
to lose a mate''
