Getting the most from baby and toddler swim lessons
Learning to swim offers many different
benefits to your child over and above the
attainment of an important life skill. Swim
lessons also provides positive opportunities for
physical, social and emotional development,
helps prevent water-related accidents and
increases enjoyment of the water. You can make a
big difference to just how much your child
benefits from this by helping provide a supportive
environment -- here's a few ideas from Nick Arnell
of Aqualand Swim School.
Allow plenty of time before lessons and
reinforce the positive, comfortable environment
that we provide here.
Ensure their swimwear is
firm fitting rather than baggy
so that it doesn't impinge on
their learning, and long hair
should be tied back or put
under a swim cap.
Give your child lots of
encouragement, praise them
for their efforts and ask what they liked most
about their lesson. Bring them a drink as well as a
dry change of clothes for afterwards.
Try to spend time in the water outside of
lessons as it will further
increase their confidence,
reinforce the positive
water experience and help
them progress rapidly. For
the greatest improve-
ments in your child's
progress we recommend
taking swim lessons year
round to ensure that their skills don't recede.
Aqualand Swim School has lessons available for
those aged six months or more. They are currently
offering 50% off Happy Hippo swim lessons for
3-5 year olds (now just $4.75/class) which include
free use of the leisure pool before or after class
and an achievement certificate and award chart.
Private and abilities lessons are also available for
one-to-one instructor attention and multi-lesson
and multi-child discounts available to help make
it more affordable for families.
If you could do with a little help in the water
yourself, they are offering two-for-one adult
beginner & intermediate group swim lessons. So
pair up with a friend and get five weeks of lessons
for just $38.75/person. Contact aqualandswim-
email@example.com or call 03 450 9115.
Licensed home-based childcare provider
Queenstown is a
based childcare pro-
and the Cromwell
region. It is locally
owned and operated
by Pip Walsh, a
qualified teacher with
10 years' experience under her belt.
Educarents offer very affordable, licensed early
childhood care and education, providing your
0-5 year old with a unique early childhood
education programme. Your ECE subsidy
through Educarents is available for up to 30
hours per week of childcare.
Whether you already have a nanny caring for
your child, you can join Educarents and benefit
from their educational programme.
From doing this, you are heavily subsidising the
cost of your childcare, upskilling your chosen
carer and your child is having a one-on-one
relationship with their carer and forming a
secure attachment and bond which is vital for
all children aged 0-3 years. These relationships
in a child's life shape your child's future
relationships and create new connections in
your child's brain.
Nannies receive continual training, first aid
workshops, plus on going personal support.
Educarents subsidies are not means tested and
are paid in addition to any WINZ childcare
subsidy eligible families receive. Educarents
subsidies are currently double that of any other
home based childcare provider in the area, for
children aged under two years. Some families
are receiving up to $300 per week toward the
cost of their childcare.
''From living and working here for the past five
years, I know the cost living is here is very high,
add childcare into the mix and it can make it
very difficult for families. Educarents now
makes this an affordable option for all families,''
''I saw Queenstown was in much need of a
good quality home based care service that has
a very strong educational focus.''
Educarents charity can also assist to bring
parent education to the community.
Educarents Queenstown brings a variety of
educational speakers to come and speak to the
Educarents families and caregivers. On the 24th
June Educarents are bringinh Moving Smart ---

Pip is committed to working alongside existing
