Treasure: New Wakatipu Senior Citizens Association president Dorothy Gavin (left)
and Age Concern co-ordinator Helen Stevens (right) give longtime Queenstown
resident Shirley McGregor, 83, a hug at the Wakatipu Senior Citizens World Elder
Abuse Awareness Day purple-themed tribute lunch on Friday. Elderly residents
enjoyed a delicious meal and a performance by the St Joseph's School Choir. It was
World Elder Abuse Awareness Day on Saturday. Age Concern's theme was Always
Respected, Never Abused and Mrs Stevens said it was ''vital people speak out'' about
elder abuse and neglect. This could take the form of financial and material abuse,
through to psychological and physical abuse or neglect. A phone call to Age Concern
( 441 3490) was the right step. Mrs Stevens estimated she dealt with up to 10 cases of
elder abuses in the Wakatipu a year. Most of these involved financial abuse, some of
them from family. ''Don't let feat of meddling in someone else's business stop you
from voicing your concern. It is time to stop elder abuse in our communities and if we
all pull together we can achieve this,'' she said.

Slainte: Tomas Griffin on banjo, and Eliza Anderson on bodhran drum during
weekly traditional Irish music sessions at the Fork and Tap in Arrowtown. The
Wednesday night get-togethers have become a hit with the locals. They are run
by three Irish musicians who host the evening -- playing and singing some Irish
tunes while patrons enjoy a meal or drink. The floor is open for others to turn up
with their instruments and join in.
